Thankful

I am grateful for hot water
that helps me start my day
and for my hot toast
with PB and gelée

A cozy bed and warm sheets
that help me rest and relax
and a job with a salary
to pay my bills and that tax

My wife and my kids
who love me for who I am
and my family and friends
and pals on FB and Instagram

Thanks to the One who never sleeps
Who helps me fix my mess
and puts solid ground under my feet
I am #blessed

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Blue vs. Red

img_0613
Blue vs. Red
Diametrically opposed
We want it our way
Even if it comes to blows

I’m on the right side of history
So it’s my way or the highway
Not only will I school you
But I’ll also make you pay

Wait a minute!
Is this what we have become?
Sworn enemies for life
Wishing death to some?

Who don’t agree with us
Nor sing the same tune?
We easily call them foes
And insult them as buffoons?

Isn’t unity better
To agree to disagree?
Listening to one another
Knowing it’s not all about me?

If you take some steps back
You’ll see that it was really a trap
To allow the ones on top
To take the best and leave us with the crap

To fight over and ruin
What we worked hard to build
To destroy close bonds
We allowed hatred to kill

Peace at all costs
That should be the goal
Building up one another
And valuing the soul

Optimism to a fault
If no one will follow
Yet the alternative is bleak
And our world will be left hallow

This world we can fix
Our words must change course
And choose life over death
Leaving our world better; not worse.

I am disappointed as member of our adult generation. We refuse to see beyond the rhetoric (is it even rhetoric anymore?) as our children watch and learn as we hurl insults at each other and end relationships based on political views. That’s not what we taught them. Actually, that is what we are teaching them right now; that it’s ok to hide our prejudices behind self-righteousness, and it’s ok to harm people and property when our world is not aligned like we think it should be. Our younger generation deserves better. Don’t you agree?

Quotes by El Gran Queso

The 3 latest quotes from El Gran Queso:

“The only thing you are entitled to is a headlock. “

“I am going to get food truck and sell knuckle sandwiches.”

“The only place it’s ok for a dude to wear tight pants is in the ring.”

profile dreamerThanks everyone for taking the time to visit, like, comment on my posts and follow my content on social media, especially here on my blog. I have been writing for many years, but did not have a plan to share it, nor did I have the artistic skills to illustrate my stories. (I like pictures.) I discovered the awesomeness of mobile photography and now can mix lines of words with my images I take with my phone.

I am taking Gumroad.com ’s 30-day challenge to help grow my audience and launch an eBook collection of my 1-minutes stories and poems. Thanks again for your support, and if you dig my work, fill out your email address, hit that subscribe button and spread the word. I’m already mixing up great content for subscribers. Cheers! Joe

I need your eyes!

I am working on an eBook of 1-minute stories and poems. What looks better when you are reading on a tablet or phone in portrait mode? (I formatted to page to fit on an iPad in portrait mode and assume most tablets or Kindle readers would be similar.)

Is it the first one with the poem on the image?

Or do you prefer the second one with text on the page but below the image?

Please share your preference in the comments below. Thanks! ~Joe

Do What You Love To Do

Do what you love to do. Don’t leave your day job if you have to feed some faces and pay the bills. You can work your way towards a full-time gig if you stay focused and determined. Your window of opportunity may be closing, but it may not be closed. Your gift will create opportunities for you. If you give it all you got and fail, it is still better than not trying at all. Do not wait for the right moment because that moment may never come. You may have heard these statements before, but an encouraging word never gets old. Today is the perfect day to start or restart.

What is that dream or desire? What are you going to do about it today?

A Wedding 50 Floors Above L.A.

The Big Fake Wedding was a bridal show literally above the Los Angeles skyline. It was organized by wedding vendors for future brides and grooms to experience a “fake” wedding ceremony and reception. Planners, wedding singers, and photographers were among the larger group of vendors in action at the event. It may have been a fake wedding, but the work that went into was real. I experienced that reality firsthand because I assisted my wife, who was the floral designer of this unique event.

Before you see the visual essay, here’s a couple of thoughts about marriage. Most people spend way more time preparing and educating themselves to have a career or pursue a hobby than they would preparing for a marriage relationship that is supposed to last a lifetime. Take the time to prepare beyond the wedding for a life-long marriage. If you are already in a marriage relationship and want it to be better, then take the initiative to invest into your relationship. Isn’t your relationship worth it?

Hoop Dreams

It’s the beginning of the NBA season again, and my beloved Lakers are giving me a million reasons not to stay beloved. This is going to be a long season. While I am doing a lot of cringing, sighing, and throwing household objects at the wall, at least I can dream of my own highlights. I think if you are a fan of basketball, it is hard not to have your own ESPN highlight scripted in your head.

FIVE….. Down one with just a breath of time left on the clock. The arena is deafening. Stalling at the top of the key, he steps forward with the dribble. The defenders are scrambling, anticipating the final play.
FOUR…. His first step down the lane is met with bodies with the opposite uniforms collapsing on him. He seems trapped in the sea of bodies enveloping around him.
THREE… His crossover causes an entire squad to shift the wrong way in unison. One defender and 15 feet of space between the ball and the net is all who is left to deny him of the W.
TWO.. He pump fakes with time slipping away. The defender bites and jumps high in the air with bad intentions but is now airborne and not able to use his length to block the shot.
ONE. He jumps fading away out of the outstretching arms of the opponent. His hand flicks the basketball towards the orange cylinder. All eyes track the ball arc through the air.
ZERO- The buzzer is barely heard over of the pandemonium of the home crowd screaming with joy. The TV announcer screams, “Nothing but net! He won the game! He won the game!”

Saving Memories on Video

I remember capturing a video of my son riding his skateboard about 10 years ago. I used my Sony video camera to capture about ten seconds of footage of my son riding his skateboard towards me. Afterwards, I plugged my video camera into my laptop and uploaded the video from the camera to the computer. From there, I was able to edit the video on my computer then burn the finished video on DVD. The video wasn’t just about my son riding his skateboard, but I remember that segment took about 15 minutes from upload to editing.

It is amazing how much technology is advancing at a blazingly fast pace. I took this video of my daughters launching their rockets at a science camp last week. I used my iPhone, and yes, I realize I could also use an Android or Windows phone as well, but I own an iPhone. The video clips never left my phone. I assembled about 4 clips and added transitions and music. I finished the video in less than 10 minutes. I was ready to share my video with my family and friends via email, text, YouTube, FaceBook, and all the other social-media-video-sharing apps available.

When I finished I asked myself, “Did I really just make a home movie on my phone?” Yes, I did. I think I made my first video on my phone years ago, but it is just getting easier each year. No more looking for cables and discs. I believe it is important to record the moments for yourself and your loved ones. Technology is making it easier.

Illustrate Your Story

This is one of my latest photo edits to illustrate a story I wrote, “Flower in a Cup.” I am a visual person. I think in images. That is how I process information best, and that is how I express myself. I have been writing sporadically for over 15 years, but consistently not until this past year. I think I found my niche to share with the world through social media, and it’s quirky one-minute fictional stories. I really can’t draw, but maybe I should invest in pencils. For now, it is my iPhone and apps to manipulate my images to illustrate my stories. I love doing it and seem to be learning a few things.

Shouldn’t each one of us be illustrating our own story? You are unique and bring that one-of-kind flavor to the world. Without your flavor, life would be bland.
